Posture

Sitting and walking with your back in a slouched position can compromise your appearance, mood and health. That is why when growing up, our parents and teachers would tell us to sit up straight, stand and walk with our shoulders back and head up so we have a good posture.

So I Googled the benefits of good posture; I found out that when you maintain a good posture, you don’t strain your hips, shoulders, neck, back or torso and as a result you put less strain on your bones, joints and ligaments. Before this turns into a biology lesson, my point is that by simply getting your posture right, both the upper and lower parts of your body benefit.

Motivational speakers also delve into the good posture subject, that by simply fixing it you can command the attention of an entire room. In simple terms “Posture” is a game changer because in assuming this state, you yield more benefits.

Let us look at “Posture” in a spiritual aspect. I have taken these two verses in the Bible and put a spin on them to drive my point across.

• “Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong.” – 1 Corinthians 16:13.
• “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”- John 16:33

Lets look at 1 Corinthians 16:13 through the Cause and Effect theory, which means that something comes into being based on a happening or action. “Being on guard, Standing in faith” equates to Posture, it empowers us/produces within us courage and strength. But why do we need to be courageous and strong? Simple, because life is not easy, a fact we all know.

God would not have gone through the trouble of having the Bible written if life was a simple walk in the park for anyone. Leading to John 16:33, In my 28 years of life, if anything is inevitable its that “Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows” Jesus said it! But our awesome Lord and Saviour doesn’t stop there, he further tells us to take heart, because He overcame the world and he has revealed this truth about the world so we may have peace in Him.

In this verse, we attain posture by knowing that Jesus has overcome the world. So regardless of the bad news, feelings of inadequacy, loneliness, pain and every single bad thing inherent in this world that we might face, assuming the posture that He who overcame lives in us is evidence enough that we too will overcome and be at peace.

I challenge you to identify verses in the Bible that teach us how to assume posture as I have done with these two above. These will help us in tackling everyday challenges and triumphs because we also need to assume posture even when everything is going well.

My parting words are this- Let us fix our posture by fixing our eyes on the Lord!
